Located on a historic estate over 115 years old, this university will not only serve as a hub for learning but also as a model for sustainability. With nearly 18 hectares of land, the project includes plans for eco-friendly agricultural practices and biodiversity preservation, making it the first eco-Islamic university. It connects students with nature, history, and their faith. 

The university offers unique academic programs in Arabic and Spanish, accredited by international institutions. From foundational diplomas to advanced degrees in Islamic Sciences and Theology, the programs are designed to prepare imams, murshidat, and scholars to lead communities with strong Islamic values in a modern world. 

With over 580 million Spanish speakers worldwide, this university addresses a critical need for authentic Islamic education in the Spanish language. BUT THERE IS ALWAYS HOPE FOR A BETTER FUTURE, AND THAT FUTURE FINALLY ARRIVED

The legacy of our Andalusian ancestors is undeniable—a heritage that humanity has inherited and from which all the people on Earth still benefit today. A legacy that spans all fields of science, with a prominent place in Islamic sciences. A legacy that continues to attract millions of people from around the world to visit our cities and towns, especially Andalusia.

However, everything that rises in this world tends to descend, and that is what happened in Al-Andalus. From being an exemplary model of coexistence, it became, after the Christian conquest and during the Inquisition, one of the darkest chapters in history. It was no longer permitted to study Islam, to believe differently, or to dress differently; even the Arabic language was prohibited among Christian Moriscos.

But there is always hope for a better future, and that future finally arrived.

Religious freedom became a reality again in these lands, and Muslims resurfaced. Some returned from the places where the expelled Andalusians had sought refuge, and others who had remained here embraced Islam individually and with their families. I am, precisely, a mix of all that.

Today, Muslims in Spain number almost three million. We have humble mosques, musallas, small academies, and schools.

Our diverse culture intertwines, and we face the same challenges as Muslims living in what some call the West. If I had to point out the two biggest challenges, I would say they are Islamic education and identity.

 

For over a decade, at Al-Andalusia, we have worked tirelessly to offer quality Islamic education, mindful of our context and thus forging our identity. We have implemented a curriculum that covers all educational levels: preschool, primary, secondary, high school, and finally, university education with our diplomas and degree in Islamic Sciences and Theology.

Therefore, the time has come to take this historic step and found the Al-Andalusia Islamic University of Spain alongside the Andalusian Studies Center, in a place that connects us directly with our Din (faith) and our Andalusian legacy, reinforcing our Spanish-Andalusian Muslim identity.

I do not exaggerate when I say that this is a dream come true and the materialization of millions of duás (supplications) from present and past generations—from those who bid farewell to their land with tears while being rocked in a boat in the middle of the sea, expelled from the land of their ancestors.

Only Allah knows what the future holds for us, but I am infinitely grateful to Him for allowing us to visualize this dream and make it a reality. Now it is up to us— teachers, students, and the community in general—to strive to meet the challenge and become what we once were, as our Andalusian anthem beautifully says:

“The Andalusians want to be what we once were, men of light who gave other men their soul.”

ESTABLISHMENT AND GROWTH OF AL-ANDALUSIA

Al-Andalusia was established in 2013 by Sheikh Mohammad Idrissi after he graduated in Islamic Sciences and Arabic Literature, specializing in Fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence). Upon returning to his hometown of Seville, he was convinced that the Spanish Muslim community needed a solid educational system accessible to people of all ages and levels.

The Al-Andalusia Islamic Center began with the Academy, focusing on early childhood, primary, and secondary education. A few years later, the Higher Institute of Islamic Sciences of Spain was founded to train teachers, imams, murshidat (female spiritual guides), and ulemas.

To date, more than 600 students have benefited from our diplomas, degrees, training programs, and courses globally, with active students from 22 different countries.

Our academic structure has been recognized by the International Islamic University Malaysia, and we have established collaborative ties for research and publication, teaching and supervision, joint work in academic development, and accreditation of our diplomas and degrees.

We are the first institution internationally to offer this type of training in Spanish and Arabic. Many of our students are already teaching Islamic Religion in public and private schools and mosques.

We strive to educate future generations who will contribute to building a just society where harmony and coexistence prevail. By celebrating our Muslim, Spanish, and Andalusian identity, we aim to revive the sciences, wisdom and arts inherited from the golden era of Al- Andalus.

The alquería or Cortijo: A Historic Gem

Our Alquería or Cortijo is a 115-year-old Andalusian estate steeped in history and cultural significance. Located in a village once inhabited by Muslims during the Al- Andalus era, it stands as a living connection to our illustrious past. The Cortijo embodies the essence of Andalusian heritage, making it the ideal setting for our university and research center. Built around a central courtyard—a hallmark of traditional Andalusian architecture—the Cortijo features surrounding halls and rooms that encapsulate the charm of a bygone era.

Unique Features and Potential

  • Ideal Educational Facilities: With existing classrooms capable of accommodating over 700 students and residential spaces for more than 180, the Cortijo is perfectly suited for an academic campus.
  • Comprehensive Amenities: Equipped with two large kitchens, a laundry facility, a mosque—including an existing minaret—the estate meets all logistical needs.
  • Future Eco-University: The extensive land, nearly 18 hectares, offers an unparalleled opportunity to revive Andalusian botany and agriculture, positioning us to become the first eco Islamic university.
  • Research: Spaces within the Cortijo are earmarked for the Andalusian Studies Center’s library, fostering research and preservation of our shared heritage

Ensuring Long-Term Viability

The sustainability of our project is grounded in a multifaceted approach to financial stability and responsible stewardship of resources. Our primary sources of ongoing support include:

  • Student Fees: Tuition from our diverse and growing student body will provide a steady and reliable source of income, supporting operational costs, faculty salaries, and program development.
  • Donations from Supporters: Generous contributions from individuals and organizations who share our vision will play a crucial role in maintaining and expanding our initiatives. These donations enable us to offer scholarships, improve facilities, and enhance educational programs.
  • Cultural and Historical Activities: We will periodically organize events and activities related to the rich history of the Andalusian legacy. These not only generate additional income but also promote cultural awareness and community engagement, reinforcing our mission to revive and celebrate our shared heritage.

In addition to these primary sources, we are committed to exploring other sustainable alternatives that leverage
the vast land and the emblematic nature of our estate.

Considering the extensive grounds surrounding the Cortijo, we will study opportunities such as sustainable agriculture projects, botanical gardens, or eco-friendly initiatives that align with Andalusian traditions. These projects can provide educational opportunities for students and potential revenue
streams.

Any new ventures will be carefully evaluated to ensure they are in harmony with our core principles and uphold the
sanctity of a place dedicated to the study of divine knowledge.
